So many times, we tend to think about our world in such terms. We talk about "big" issues, the "important" things in life, the "extraordinary" examples, the "influential" "movers and shakers" in our society.

While those things are, indeed, important, I believe that we must not forget about the "little" things: the ordinary things that make up so much of our everyday realities.

More importantly, I value the little things because they are reflections of the big things. Oftentimes, in objects or topics that we find insignificant, ordinary, or trivial, there are signs and traces of broader, more universal and significant issues. 

That, ultimately, is what this site is about. I endeavour to look for the broader themes and issues addressed in the seemingly trivial things:
  • What individuals' anecdotal stories can tell us about the world they live in
  • What social history (e.g. how people lived, ate, dressed, etc.) can tell us about the large-scale events they lived through
  • What popular culture, literature, and art can tell us as comments on our society
Sometimes, the big things in life can be manifested in the littlest of ways.

From Sea to Sea; From Coast to Coast to Coast (Canada Day 2021)

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea. This line, from the King James Version of Psalm 72, forms the basis for Canada's national motto: a mari usque ad mare  (from sea to sea). It's a reference to the country's vast geographic range, from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west; recent iterations of the concept have even made it three-way by including the Arctic Ocean in the north as well: "from coast to coast to coast". (The farthest east and west I have ever been in Canada: Halifax, Nova Scotia on the Atlantic, and Victoria, British Columbia on the Pacific) Looking back through the archives, I notice that my first post on this blog was on Canada Day 2017; now, during this revival of the blog four years later, I've come back around full circle to Canada Day 2021. Canada's Beauty in Stillness (Part 1): These Very Walls which Shelter Us Now (Canada Day 2022)

Peace, order, and good government. This may not be a slogan you've heard before, but it's one that is, surprisingly, quite significant to Canadian history. Versions of it have appeared in Acts of Parliament affecting Canada's administration as a British colony since the mid-18th century and its current iteration was included in the British North America Act of 1867 (a.k.a. the Constitution Act, 1867 ) that established Canada as an independent nation - the very point in history that we now celebrate, understandably, as Canada Day. Now, in its original context, "Peace, order and good government" was an expression of political authority. It was initially a formal concession from the British government allowing colonial governments to enact their own laws, then became an authorization for the federal government to do so for the newly-independent nation as a whole.
